Turkish black beauty Boots is a 2 year old male pointer that was found in a government shelter. We called him Boots due to his white paws.
He was emaciated when found but now with love and care he weighs a healthy 25kg. He loves humans and is good with other dogs. He has not been cat tested. His prey drive is medium.
Boots is neutered and has a health book with all the vaccinations up to date. He has a passport and a microchip so he will be ready to travel as soon as he finds his family.
All the vet checks have been carried out including blood tests and all came back clear. He has little scars on his face, likely to be from dog bites but they are no cause of concern.
He is in a foster home and this is what they say about Boots:
“Boots came to us as a foster in September 2024 from Turkey. To start with a home environment was obviously quite alien to him and was very restless with very few boundaries. However, he has settled into the routine of daily life very well over the last weeks and am confident he will continue to do so as he progresses. To start with we had to clear all surfaces and getting through doors was difficult but he is learning the words No and Wait which is making things much easier. When we call him in the house he comes to us.
I work from home a few days a week and after his morning walk & breakfast he is happy to curl up on the sofa or the carpet to sleep while I work. He likes to be in the same room as you and if you get up he will follow.
He is house trained as long as you remember to take him out relatively regularly and we think he might have started to give a little bark when he wants to go out for a wee. He is clean overnight.
Being a boy he has scent marked a few times in the house and whilst I wouldn’t totally trust him not to do it again he is definitely learning it is unacceptable. He is most likely to do it when he is excited and exploring.
He is very affectionate and friendly. He loves a stroke and to cuddle up on the sofa and I think this is the time he feels most comfortable and will frequently fall asleep and start snoring on your lap.
He has been fine with our resident dog from the start. Initially he tended to ignore her but now they are starting to play regularly. This can be quite boisterous at times. He can be protective of his food with her as he has growled at her when he is eating and he has tried to take her food. He has not growled at us and we are able to take his food away from him without issue. He likes to play with toys but does enjoy destroying them as soon as possible.
We have had various visitors over the last few weeks some with their own dog and he has been friendly with new people & dogs in the house and the noise this brings.
He does not walk well on a lead and is very strong. This is something we are working on and is improving but we currently walk him on 2 leads. Being in the country we regularly encounter pheasants, rabbits & deer on our walks which does make him very excited. We have taken him to a dog field once to let him off the lead. He really enjoyed this and thoroughly enjoyed playing ball and would return it and come back to us when we called him although was distracted by some new smells some of the time. We are lucky to have an enclosed secure barn which we are using for training and to let him have a run. We have taught him to sit and are working on stay and recall. We have a food puzzle and wobble ball that he enjoys doing. He seems very intelligent and a quick learner. We have not left him off the lead unless he is secure.
We have taken him in the car and he has been excellent. Hops in happily and just curls up in the boot with our dog and goes to sleep.
We are able to shut him in our utility room alone. He will cry for 5-10 minutes but then settles down and is quiet. Initially we put him in a cage overnight for his safety but we now trust him to be left in the room overnight without being shut in the cage. Again he will cry for a few minutes and then settles for the night.”
