Pointers In Need ….. just a name, but it means we do our best to assist whenever, and for whatever reason, a Pointer needs help. Rescuing Pointers in need from overseas is a main part of our work, but we also rehome Pointers within the UK – possibly because circumstances change for their families and sometimes because, just like humans, dogs in a home decide they simply do not like each other.
This is such a story, told by Nicola ….. with a happy ending for two lovely dogs.
‘In the summer of 2024 we contacted Pointers In Need. We were having to make the most horrendous decision of our lives. To rehome, after two years, our beautiful liver and white Pointer, Izzy.
‘Sadly Izzy and Bella, our senior 8-year-old Pointer girl, were no longer best buddies. It was clear Izzy needed to be in a home where she could be top dog. Izzy found her forever home via Pointers In Need, and went to live with the most wonderful family. She is living her best life in the stunning Welsh countryside.
‘We could not have wished for a better home for Izzy, and we are in regular contact with her new mummy and daddy.
‘This experience led me to want to “give back” and so for the first time in my life, having had Pointers for nearly 30 years, I started to follow Pointers In Need. Could we offer a forever home to a dog who had not had the kind of start that our lovely Izzy had?
‘I had only been looking for a few weeks when I saw Flock’s little face staring back at me from the Pointers In Need website – about 3 months old, and described as fit, happy and playful. He had the most beautiful soulful eyes.
‘I had not had a male dog since childhood, and always thought bitches were for me. But after the experience with our two girls, we were advised to alternate between adding males and females in order to keep harmony.
‘Flock reminded us so much of another Pointer we had tragically lost, so it really felt that the stars were aligning.
‘Flock was found abandoned in the woods in Greece. A tiny bundle fighting for life on his own, without his mum to care for him. With no-one to show him the way, and provide him with the food he so desperately needed.
‘Despite this, Flock was lucky. He was found, and fostered immediately, and was nurtured and loved by Marianna until he was old enough for Pointers In Need to arrange his long journey to the UK.
‘He arrived with us at 9.15 pm on a very cold February night – it was my stepson’s birthday! As soon as I took him into my arms, I fell in love. He dragged me around the garden with confidence and exuberance – no sign of fatigue for this little chap!
‘From this moment, we knew we had the perfect addition to our family. Bella made it clear to him what the boundaries were, which made our life much easier.
‘Flock showed little sign of nerves but having worked with horses all my life, I knew that did not mean he did not carry some trauma, so I continued to watch him carefully.
‘He is wary of strange men to start, but soon learns to trust them. He is wary of traffic, but in a streetwise way. And he has the normal high prey drive of an active young Pointer.
He is extremely bright and cuddly. In fact, the best cuddles I have ever had from a dog!!
‘Flock and Bella are best of friends: sharing their toys, playing chase in the garden and snuggling up together when they run out of energy.
‘We could not have been luckier than to have Flock in our lives and I know this is just the beginning of our Pointers In Need journey.
‘Thank you to all at Pointers In Need, and the biggest thank you to Marianna for giving Flock such an incredible foster home. And, of course, to Flock himself, for being the most special boy.’
