Bramble…

a fabulous Pointer living his very best life in Hampshire and helping make retirement positive, rewarding and busy.

Pointers In Need rehome UK bred Pointers as well as rescue Pointers from Spain, Greece and Turkey. Not as many, but, in 2025 we found eleven UK bred Pointers wonderful new homes.

“BRAMBLE was handed into Pointers In Need by his breeder/owner when he was 4 years old.  His family had consisted of two adults, with another baby on the way, their 6 year old son, Bramble’s mother,  a King Charles Spaniel ….. and Bramble! He was 6th in the pecking order.

“We collected Bramble from Dorset in August 2019. It was a 3 hour drive back to our then home in Surrey.  I sat on the back seat, with Bramble sitting on my lap, shaking like a jelly.  He was so scared – but I was stroking him continuously and whispering in his ear that everything was going to be ok and it was just the start of a new adventure for us all.

“The moment we arrived home with him, and he stepped inside the door, he sniffed around for a bit. Then he went and plonked himself down in the Tuffie bed (it was our previous dog’s bed) that we had got ready for him. it was almost like he was telling us that he had arrived, he approved and was staying! From that day we knew that adopting Bramble was the best thing we could have done.

“He settled in so quickly, it was as if we had always owned him.  From that moment he became number one in the pecking order!

“In 2005. I had established a dog walking business and I was a bit worried as to how Bramble would fit in with a new pack. I need not have worried. He got on with every single dog in my walking pack, and was coming with me on every dog walk I did and so enjoyed the fun.

“He came with me too when I went to a private stables. where I was also looking after two retired horses.  He was such a good boy and so calm around the horses. He would just lay in the sun and watch me doing my chores.

“Unfortunately, in March 2020. Covid hit and the country went into lockdown. Bramble became the main focus of our lives.  To say we spoiled him is an understatement. During that awful  time he became the reason for our getting out of bed in the mornings, and taking long walks in the countryside, in the warm summer days that followed.

“We found Bramble to be a very fast learner. And his recall to the whistle became excellent.  He is such an easy dog to walk on and off lead as he only wants to please us.

“After lockdown finished my husband and I decided, at the request of our son and his family, that it would be prudent to move closer to them and not have the hour and half journey, each way just to visit. So, in November 2021, we moved to a place called Widley, which is just outside Portsmouth  – and another adventure began. Bramble loves living near the coast and enjoys all the lovely walks that are available to us.

“One small idiosyncrasy that Bramble does have, is the fact that he has never peed or pooed in either of our back gardens. Fortunately, our new back garden has a gate onto an ancient footpath called the Wayfarers footpath. It leads onto open fields and means we don’t have to do a half-hour walk at 10 o’clock at night, just so that Bram can relieve himself!

“It was the best day ever that Bramble came into our lives and at the age of 76 for myself and 87 for my husband,  we are certain that Bramble completes our lives and keeps us young at heart and fit.

“Today,  I took him for a lovely long walk to the top of Butser Hill, Hampshire. As always happens, out on walks with him, I had five different people stop me to pet him and tell me what a handsome boy he is …… and that he trots like a dressage pony!”
