In October 2025, we at Pointers in Need were called to assist Lady, a beautiful pointer girl residing in a pound in Valencia. Her story highlights the vital importance of compassion, intervention, and generous donations in animal welfare—especially for dogs living in shelters, who often face uncertain futures while waiting for new homes.
Pointers are admired for their elegance, intelligence, and friendly nature, making them beloved companions. Yet many pointers end up in pounds due to abandonment, loss, or other unfortunate circumstances. The Valencia pound where Lady was kept serves as a temporary refuge but, like many shelters worldwide, struggles with overcrowding and limited resources.
Our involvement began with a thorough assessment of Lady’s physical and emotional state. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our colleague Angie in Valencia, Lady was released from the pound and placed in a residencia. Shortly after, it was revealed that she had low-grade mammary cancer. Lady underwent two surgeries and made a full recovery. Her pre-existing condition, however, made finding a new home more challenging. Thankfully, the majority of her treatment costs—approximately £2,000—were covered by generous donations from our loyal supporters. This financial support was crucial in giving Lady a second chance at life.
Dogs in pounds often suffer from stress and anxiety. Ensuring their well-being requires patience, expert care, proper nutrition, and gentle socialization to rebuild their trust in humans. Alongside her medical care, our focus was on securing Lady a permanent, loving home where she could thrive.
We raised awareness about Lady’s story and celebrated the charm and beauty of pointer breeds to encourage adoption. A previous adopter from Copenhagen, who had recently lost one of her pointers, graciously offered Lady a forever home as a companion for her existing dog. Transporting Lady from Alicante, Spain, to Copenhagen by air posed significant logistical challenges. Without the tireless help of Angie and Jan, our coordinator in Spain, this would not have been possible. Their dedication and careful coordination ensured Lady’s safe journey—from the residencia to the airport, a two-hour trip—and arranged for a flight buddy to accompany her.
Since February 15th, Lady has been living happily in her new home, gradually adjusting to the weather and surroundings.
Lady’s journey—from a vulnerable pound in Valencia to a hopeful new life—demonstrates the critical role of community support, dedicated individuals, and responsible pet ownership in transforming shelter animals’ lives. Her story is a powerful reminder of how kindness, teamwork, and generous donations can truly change lives.
